1. Stay healthy. Even though healthy people can still get sick with swine flu, if you are a healthy person, your chances of falling ill because of the virus will become minimal. To stay healthy, you need to eat food rich in vitamins and other nutrients and drink plenty of liquids. You also need to exercise regularly, make sure you have a good night’s sleep, as well as avoid getting stressed out.

Because you will never know when you will be touching something infected, it is important that you wash your hands frequently, especially before eating.

Use soap and warm water whenever you can and spend around 20 seconds washing your hands each time you do. If soap and warm water are not available, have a bottle of hand sanitizer or isopropyl alcohol around all the time. When you use a hand sanitizer or alcohol, rub your hands until the alcohol has dried off.

4. Avoid touching public surfaces. Surfaces in a public place are breeding grounds for germs. So many people pass by these places and you will never know which one is sick and transmitting the swine flu virus. Therefore, you should avoid touching public surfaces like escalator or stairwell rails and doorknobs whenever possible. If you cannot avoid doing so, then wash your hands frequently.

5. Keep surfaces in your household clean. You and other members of your family bring inside the house the germs that you have picked up from outside. If you are not careful, you can leave trails of germs on doorknobs, countertops and other surfaces in your home.
