7 Activities to do at Your Workplace During Drug Free Work Week

Here are a few ideas that can be very helpful when you are trying to reiterate the idea of a drug free workplace:

  1. Host a Safety and Health Social Event: This type of activity offers a great opportunity to show how much fun a social gathering can be with food and non-alcoholic drinks instead of alcohol and illegal substances. It doesn’t take a lot of effort and can be as simple as a few snack foods and soda to a pot-luck or a barbeque. Add a few games and simple team building activities and it can be an all day gathering. If your company has maintained a low rate of substance abuse, this could be a great opportunity to celebrate that success.
  2. Use the Company Newsletter or Computer Network: You can print or e-mail a variety of article topics discussing substance abuse and its effects on the workplace and employees. You can use the opportunity to advise employees as to the best way to handle reporting substance abuse in other employees. This would also be a great way to bring up counseling and treatment programs available in your area.
  3. Go Over Company Health Insurance: Thoroughly go over your insurance policy and determine if there is coverage for substance abuse treatment. Is the coverage adequate? If it isn’t or there is no coverage for substance abuse treatments, consider altering the policy to better suit the needs of your employees.
  4. Promote Your Drug-Free Workplace:  This is a great time to go over your drug policy to evaluate its effectiveness. Once you’ve established your policy gather a few employees to post new information about the program and other substance abuse prevention information that could be useful.
  5. Promote MAP and EAP Programs: Member Assistance Programs and Employee Assistance Programs are free, confidential programs offered to employees who need help resolving workplace and personal problems which include substance abuse. These programs can conduct private substance abuse screenings and help employees to find treatment programs in the area. They can help establish an avenue of recovery for those who abuse illegal substances and offer intervention to those who have such problems.
  6. Establish a Drug Free Workplace: If your worksite does not have a drug free policy in place this is a great time to establish one. Be sure to verify your area’s regulations for such programs and formulate a drug testing plan that you can reasonably stick to over time.
  7. Run Training Programs for Supervisors: This helps you and the supervisors by helping them to properly evaluate and understand the established drug free policy, how to deal with positive drug test results, how to handle employees who may be affected by substance abuse, and how to point employees toward area treatment programs. This is an important step of establishing an effective drug free program as it help to maintain respectful interaction between supervisors and employees, makes the policy clear and offers supervisors an opportunity to ask about any parts of the program they’re uncertain about.

The most important aspect of Drug Free Work Week is helping your employees to maintain or establish a drug free lifestyle. Offering activities that promote this will help a great deal for the rest of the year.
