In the state of Massachusetts, cocaine and heroin are the two main drug substances abused. Columbian and Dominican drug traffickers control the distribution of these illegal substances. Cocaine remains to be readily available from sources in the New York area, Florida and the Southwest border. They are often transported via commercial transit, tractor trailers and vehicle compartments and even via mail services. Street gangs distribute these illegal goods in Boston and other areas in Massachusetts. Crack also remains to be the drug of choice in Boston city.
Heroin also remains widespread with retail distribution among networks of ethnic groups and because heroin comes at a much cheaper price. Heroin overdose deaths and incidence continues to be a growing concern in Massachusetts. Methamphetamine use, on the other hand, is more limited with only few cases in the Cape Cod and western areas of the state.
MDMA or ecstasy and ketamine are readily accessed at ‘rave parties’, nightclubs and college campuses. Sources come from couriers traveling via commercial airlines and express mail deliveries in New York and Western Europe. Ketamine can be obtained from legitimate sources such as veterinary clinics and nightclubs especially in the greater Boston areas.
Marijuana is also readily available throughout Massachusetts, with products coming from Mexico, southwestern United States, the Netherlands and other countries. There has also been an increasing rater of indoor-cultivated marijuana throughout the state. Other illegal drugs popular in the Boston area include Oxycodone, Percocet, Roxicet and OxyContin.
