Minneapolis – St. Paul Testing Guide

Minneapolis

Minneapolis is Minnesota’s largest city and county seat of Hennepin County. The city is placed on both sides of the Mississippi River, near the river’s junction with the Minnesota River and connects with Saint Paul, the state capital. These two areas form the central part of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, generally referred to as the ‘Twin Cities’. It is the country’s 16th largest metropolitan area with an estimated population of about 360,000.

Minneapolis has abundant water resources such as lakes, wetlands, creeks and waterfalls in addition to the Mississippi riverfront, the reason why it was nicknamed the ‘City of Lakes’. The city was also formerly known as the ‘Mill City’ being the world’s flour milling capital and core of the timber industry. Currently, it is regarded as an important primary business center and is home to many cultural organizations involved in theater, visual arts, music and writing. Minneapolis is also known for its altruistic public social programs through private and corporate charities.

The city of Minneapolis is divided into 11 communities. Each of them contains several official neighborhoods and unofficial neighborhoods as well. Because of the various ways the city streets are addressed, it was informally divided into directional divisions namely, the South, North, Southeast, Northeast, Downtown and Southwest Minneapolis. The city’s 11 communities include Calhoun-Isles, Camden, Central, Longfellow Near North, Nokomis, Northeast, Phillips, Powderhorn, Southwest and the University.

Along with these neighborhoods, Minneapolis also contains unofficial districts such as:

• The Uptown which is a popular Minneapolis business district

• The East Street, which is the city’s newest commercial district

• The Old St. Anthony district, commonly known as the Northeast

• Dinkytown which has a dense student population

• The Warehouse District which was historically a rail and truck shipping hub in the region. Nowadays, it is more popular as a nightlife and entertainment district.

• Others districts of Minneapolis include Saint Anthony Main, the Mills District, Lowry Hill East or ‘The Wedge’, Minnehaha and the Tower Hill.

Saint Paul

Saint Paul is the 2nd most inhabited city in the state on Minnesota. This capital lies on the northern bank of the Mississippi River. The city also serves as the county seat of Ramsey County, Minnesota’s smallest and most populated county. Saint Paul has also several notable neighborhoods and is sometimes described as ‘fifteen small towns with one mayor’, with most areas in the city having a neighborhood-based life. The city itself is governed by 17 City Districts, with some boundaries overlapping areas of famous neighborhoods.
Saint Paul’s seventeen Planning Districts include: the Sunray-Battlecreek-Highwood, Greater East Side, West Side, Dayton’s Bluff, Payne-Phalen, North End, Thomas Dale or Frog town, Summit-University, West Seventh, Como, Hamline-Midway, Saint Anthony Park, Union Park, Macalester-Groveland, Highland (Highland Park), Summit Hill and the Downtown.
