The Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News is considered as a Metropolitan Statistical Area. This definition is given by the United States Office of Management Budget. Collectively, the area is called as the Hampton Roads of the Metropolitan Area. It covers areas in both the states of Virginia and North Carolina. The largest among the three cities belonging to the Hampton Roads is the Virginia Beach.
These areas draw vacationers because of its magnificence. The promotion of tourism in the area makes a better stand for its economy. The MSA is rank number 33 among all the largest metropolitan areas in the United States with a recorded population of 1.7 million in the 2007 US Census Bureau.
Natural areas are present in the area including beaches, rivers, state parks, botanical gardens and wildlife refuges. It is the home to the Great Dismal Swamp and the Lake Drummond. It also has a very long waterfront property located along several rivers and waterways within the locale.
The water area of this side of the US is regarded as one of the biggest natural harbors not only in America but in the whole world. Included in the magnificent waterline are the likes of the rivers of James and Elizabeth. It extends to the so-called Chesapeake Bay which then leads to the bigger Atlantic Ocean.
The land area of the MSA includes different towns, cities and counties. The breakdown of the metropolitan area is covered as follows:
• Towns. There are seven towns forming part of the MSA. These are: Claremount, Dendron and Surry located in Surry County; Courtland and Boykins situated in Southampton County; and Smithfield and Windsor of Isle of Wight County.
• Cities. There are nine cities independent from any county in the areas covered by the MSA. The list includes: Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake found at the South Hampton Roads; and those seating on the Virginia Peninsula like Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and Williamsburg.
• Counties. It is in the Middle Peninsula where the counties of Gloucester and Isle of Wight are located. The MSA covers one county in North Carolina – the Currituck County. All the rest of the group comes from Virginia namely the counties of James, Matthews, Surry and York.
