Going out to party or clubbing is fun when you want to unwind with your friends. Dance the night away and just have something different after a week’s work. It’s all fun until you wake up the next day, feeling sore and evidence of sexual activity, with no recollection of what happened. This happens when a date rape drug has been slipped into your drink.

Date Rape Drugs

There are four known date rape drugs. These drugs are used to calm the victims and to affect them in a way that they are incapable of resisting sexual advances that result to rape. These drugs are normally slipped into the victim’s drink or food unknowingly. These drugs are usually fast acting, colorless, and odourless making it hard to detect. It makes the victim unconscious but capable of movement, have no memory of what happens afterward, and a possibility that the victim will not be able to identify its attacker.

Ecstacy (MDMA) –this comes in pill form, and in different colors and sizes. It causes the victim to hallucinate and have effects similar to taking amphetamines. The street names are E, X, Stacy, XTC, Adam, lover’s speed and Eve.

Ketamine – this chemical is used as a veterinary sedative and surgical anesthetic. It is an off-white powder and appears to be cloudy water when diluted. The drug produces a dissociative anesthetic effect. The drug is also referred to as K, ket, special K, super K, KO, Vitamin K, ket kat, kid rock, and make-her-mine.

GHB (Gammy Hydroxyl Butyrate) – this is an odorless and colorless liquid. It is a depressant and anesthetic to the central nervous system. It is often called easy lay, liquid dream, liquid ecstacy, Elle, grievous bodily harm, liquid X, and get-her-to-bed.

Rohypnol –this is a prescription drug that acts as a sedative. It comes in a white pill with a split line on one side, and a “Roche” and a stamped 1 or 2 on the other side. It is also called roofies, ruffles, ridge, roche, rophy, Mexican valium, and forget-me pill.

These drugs are dangerous because they are used to take advantage of men and women. It makes the victims weak and passive making it easy for attackers to bring them anywhere. If you think you were slipped the drug and raped, you can do a drug test. However, drug traces leave the body within 72 hours after taking them. If you still want to find, there are Date Rape Drug Hair test or Date Rape Drug Hair Follicle test kit that detects the drug through testing your hair. The tests usually have a 90-day history report.

Avoid Being a Victim

The drug can easily be acquired by any individual because it is sold in the streets. Here are preventive measures to avoid being a victim of these drugs.

• Stay away from secluded areas to avoid being trapped or cornered by someone or a group.
• If you just met someone and you guys are drinking, try to stay sober and aware. Also, hold on to your drink if you can’t avoid it. This is to prevent anyone from slipping a drug into your drink.
• If someone makes you feel uneasy, follow your instincts and leave.
• Go out with your friends, as a group. This way each and every one of you will look after each other.
• Ask for help if you feel threatened.
• Learn self-defense. Enroll in classes like taekwondo, karate, or just be in shape.
