How to Manage Chronic Pain Through Pain Management Clinics

Pain is probably one of the oldest medical problem and affliction that man has known. For thousands (or even billions) of years, man has looked for solutions and different medicine to treat chronic pain. And although pain management clinics were yet to be born, many doctors alleviated chronic pain through different drugs, such as opium or even alcohol.

Advancements in technology and medical research, though, have seen the rise of several pain management clinics. These special centers have become popular, especially in a world where back pain is considered as normal as a minor scratch or bruise. But how exactly did we reach the point wherein pain management shifted from a prescription for painkillers to full-fledged facilities manned by pain specialists? Let’s look at the interesting history of pain management clinics to find out.

The Humble Beginnings of Pain Management Clinics

Although pain has long been treated by anesthesia and other injected drugs, pain management involves the treatment of pain using an interdisciplinary approach–from interventional procedures and medical management to physical therapy or even psychological counseling and support.

Different medical practitioners comprise the staff in pain management centers. Anesthesiologists, general practitioners, chiropractors, acupuncturists and even psychologists all contribute their knowledge and expertise to help patients deal with chronic pain. And although most people think that these clinics are so-called “pill-mills,” with doctors writing prescriptions of pain relievers nonstop, nothing can be further from the truth. Although pain relievers help those suffering from severe pain, pain specialists would rather explore other, healthier options, such as acupuncture and therapy first before resorting to pills.

In the United States, pain management clinics date as far back as the 1970s. Many pain centers are located inside hospital grounds themselves, while others hold their own in smaller buildings.

The Painless Way to Finding the Best Pain Centers

The most practical way to find the best pain management centers is to ask your doctor or inquire at your nearest hospital. Chances are, you’ll find pain centers in the hospital itself. It is advisable to go to a pain clinic within your preferred hospital, since you can consult with your regular doctor. You also won’t have a hard time transferring and obtaining your medical records.

On your first visit to a pain center, it’s important that you bring all medical records, including X-rays, MRIs, CTs and mayelograms related to your severe pain. You should also list down all the procedures done and all the medication you took for the pain. A nurse will do your initial check-up, followed by certain pain specialists, who can evaluate you and your condition. The doctors and specialists will then talk and consult with you regarding your different treatment options.

The most common conditions treated by pain management clinics are: spine disorders, post-stroke pain syndromes, headaches, cancer-related pain, phantom limb pain, post-operative pain and joint pain, among others.

You don’t have to resort to analgesics, anesthesia or strong painkillers all the time to be able to manage your severe pain. With today’s medical advancements and the number of pain management clinics around the country, you have better and safer options before you.
