How to Use Alcohol ETG Test for Your Teenager

A research undertaken by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism or the NIAAA showed that teenagers who became exposed to alcohol drinking at 15 are 400% more likely to have dependence on the substance once they reach age 21. Exposure to alcohol drinking may arise once they become socially active since teenagers will never decide to drink alone.

If you are worried about whether or not your teenager is exposed (or is ingesting) alcohol, you may want to pursue an Alcohol ETG test. Here is how you can use one in your teenager.

1. Inform him that there are risks to alcohol drinking. You have to explain the risks of alcohol drinking to your teenager before encouraging him to undergo the ETG test. According to the NIAAA, there can be health risks involving the brain, liver and endocrine glands. Once you have explained such risks to your teenager, then you might as well take time out to encourage him to undergo the test.

Tell him that there are also other consequences of alcohol drinking. As presented by the CDC Fact Sheet on Underage Drinking, consequences would include: absenteeism and poor grades in school; lack of participation in social activities; and legal problems such as driving arrest and even hurting others when they are under the influence of alcohol.

2. Encourage him to undergo the alcohol ETG test to get his driving license. Your child may have spoken about his intention of borrowing the car from you. Tell him that if he wants to drive the car then he better undergo ETG testing first. Inform him that you are doing it for his own safety. What if your teenager points out that there is an allowable limit for alcohol intake before driving? NHS Choices points out that while some countries like the UK sets legal alcohol limits, there is no way you will know how much a person can drink to say that he is still driving safely.

3. Schedule the time and place for the ETG test. You may want to check on him on a Monday to see if he had drunk alcohol over the weekend. An ETG test result is most reliable when taking urine samples at most 4 days after a person have ingested ethanol or alcoholic beverages. As for the place, you may have your child tested at home. ETG breath analyzers are available for home use.

4. Assure him that the results will remain private. You can always make sure that results of the test will never be disclosed to others. It is an agreement between you and your child and if you want him to undergo ETG testing, the results should be kept secret. Let him know that you can solve the problem together. Sit down and talk about it.

These are ways on how you can encourage your child to undergo an ETG test and save him from the risks involved with alcohol abuse. The secret here is to be open-minded about the situation. That way, your teenager will listen.
