Is There Really No Caffeine in Your Decaf Coffee?
When you order your usual cup of decaf fix from your favorite coffee shop, are you absolutely sure that there is no caffeine in your decaf coffee?
Coffee has become such a huge part of our culture that many people cannot seem to survive the day without drinking a cup of it in the morning. A lot of people also use coffee as a pick-me-up when they are feeling sleepy or when they need that extra boost of energy. Many of us also socialize over coffee when we do not have the time or the inclination to go out for a proper dinner-date.
Despite our love for coffee, not all of us love the caffeine that coffee contains. Caffeine may have some health benefits, but for some people, like those suffering from hypertension and anxiety problems, caffeine is a big no-no. Thankfully, it is still possible to enjoy coffee without the actual caffeine in decaf coffee.
But is decaffeinated coffee absolutely free from caffeine? You would be deluding yourself if you think you are not ingesting any caffeine in your cup of decaf coffee. Also, the manufacturer of your brand of coffee would be lying if they say that their coffee is totally free from caffeine.
Yes, Even Decaf Coffee Has Caffeine
There have been a number of studies where the researchers made a round of coffee houses and popular shops selling
coffee to test the level of caffeine in the decaf coffee that they sell. They found out that even cups of decaf sold in these coffee shops have small amounts of caffeine in them, varying from eight milligrams to 13 milligrams.
That is still small, compared to the 80 to 135 milligrams of caffeine that brewed non-decaf coffee is supposed to contain. And yet, there are coffee house chains that are found to sell decaf coffee in which the caffeine levels can rise up to 30 milligrams.
If you are a heavy coffee drinker and you believe yourself to be safe because your coffee is decaf, think again. Just because it is labeled decaf, it does not mean that there is no caffeine in your decaf coffee.
So There Is Caffeine in Decaf Coffee – Now What?
We all know that people who are pregnant, have heart ailments, impaired sleeping habits or anxiety problems are not supposed to take in caffeine as it will worsen their condition. The thing is, these people indulge in decaf coffee because they believe that decaf does not contain caffeine.
The fact that even decaf coffee has some caffeine in it should serve as a huge wake-up call for these people. Instead of being safe from caffeine, they may find their caffeine-sensitive health conditions aggravated by their consumption of decaffeinated coffee. They should still limit their intake of decaf coffee even if the caffeine content is just small.
Are you caffeine-sensitive or at risk of health conditions that can be aggravated by caffeine? Just to be on the safe side, you can take matters into your own hands and test your decaf coffee for caffeine content. You can easily do this through instant caffeine testers. These caffeine testers have chemically treated strips; all you need to do is to put a few drops of your coffee on the strip and see just how much caffeine there is in your decaf coffee.
