How to score the Test
The following are the equivalent points for each of the choices above. Use this to score your answers from numbers 1 to 16.
- 0 – Rarely (less than 1 day per week) or never
- 1 – Sometimes (1-2 days per week)
- 2 – Occasionally (3-4 days per week)
- 4 – Often (5-7 days per week) or all of the time
- If your score is 0-15 you may have a major or Unipolar Disorder. It is a major depressive disorder that does not contain any manic episode. Unlike bipolar, which have cycles of manic episodes consisting of high and low symptoms, Unipolar only have the low end of the spectrum.
- If your score is 16-25, you may have a major depression or a disorder in the bipolar spectrum.
- If your score is beyond 25, you may have a bipolar spectrum.
Questions 17-19 will not be included in the total score. They are used to adjudicate whether or not you need a further diagnosis. Use the same scale in scoring numbers 17 and 19. For number 18, score 1 point for a “no” answer and 0 for a “yes” answer. If your total score is 0-4, further diagnosis with a mental health provider is significant. If your score is 4-9, you do not need to consult a doctor. It means that your mood swings are simply caused by other factors, such as having a considerable medical condition, taking drugs, and drinking alcohol.
