Q.E.D Saliva Alcohol Test Procedure and Trouble Shooting Guide

Pretesting Procedure

During workplace alcohol testing, the certified collector must perform the following steps when using the Q.E.D. Saliva Alcohol Test:

  • Validate the employee’s identity
  • Explain the test procedure
  • Fill out necessary forms
  • Wear examination gloves
  • Choose a testing kit and check the expiration date
  • Write down testing kit details on necessary forms
  • Examine the Q.E.D. device. Dessicant package must contain blue crystals, and there should be no purple color on the capillary or QA Spot. Make sure the entry port has the red filter.

Test should not be performed when an individual just had food or drinks because the test kit is highly sensitive to ethanol. Ingesting food or drinks that may contain alcohol can cause inaccurate test results. Wait 10 minutes for the mouth to clear from food or drinks before collecting a saliva sample.

Test Procedure

Once all necessary forms are filled out and you already went through the pretest procedure, you can perform the following steps:

  • Collect saliva sample. Ask the employee to swab under the tongue, around the cheeks and gums for about 30-60 seconds. Make sure that the swab is thoroughly wet.
  • Place the Q.E.D. test on a flat surface, and then gently insert the swab sample on the entry port. The key is to apply gentle and steady pressure until the capillary fills with pink fluid.
  • Hold the sample steady for about 2 minutes.
  • Read alcohol concentration at the highest point of the purple bar. The QA Spot must turn purple to indicate that the test is valid.
  • Show test result to the employee then fill out testing form.

Interpretation and Trouble Shooting

The QA Spot is crucial when interpreting results. If the QA Spot does not show a dark purple color, it means the test is invalid; therefore you should do it again.

Other problems may also occur during the testing phase like employee refusing to complete the test and when a test is interrupted by events. Refusal means the employee does not want to sign and complete Step 2 of the testing form, refuses to provide a saliva sample, or does not cooperate to finish the test. Incomplete test means that the test was interrupted (e.g., fire alarm), employee was unable to provide sufficient saliva sample due to a medical condition, or when the collector was unable to fill device with saliva to the QA Spot. The collector must fill the necessary forms to take note of these troubles during the testing phase.

Following the proper test procedure and knowing what to do when things go wrong is important when performing any kind of test. It saves time and guarantees that all tests are accurate. The Q.E.D.
