Adrenal fatigue syndrome in women – an overview

Dr. James L. Wilson, author of the book “Adrenal Fatigue: the 21st Century Syndrome’, did not specifically mention the statistics pertaining to adrenal fatigue syndrome in women. However, he made mention about the fact that anybody can be affected by this problem. Specializing in low adrenal function, Dr. Wilson made it clear that approximately 16% of the public was affected by the problem in 1969 but if low cortisol is considered as one of the many adrenal fatigue symptoms, then chances are the 16% will increase to 50% more (from 16% to 66%).

According to Dr. Wilson, women who experience maternal adrenal fatigue gestation are susceptible to having this problem notwithstanding the fact that illness and life crisis may contribute to the plight as well. It is thereby imperative for women to know the common symptoms of this health problem.

The most common symptoms of adrenal fatigue syndrome in women

Dr. Steven F. Hotze of the Hotze Health and Wellness Center mentioned the following adrenal fatigue symptoms in women in his book ‘Hormones, Heath and Happiness’: (1) chronic fatigue; (2) hypoglycemia or low blood sugar; (3) hypotension or low blood pressure; (4) dizziness; (5) low libido; (6) infertility; (7) hair loss; (8) headaches; (9) recurrent infections; (10) muscle or joint pains; and (11) allergies or asthma. Hotze made it clear that these symptoms are somehow related to hypothyroidism.

Aside from the symptoms enumerated by Hotze, it pays to take a look at some other contributory factors of adrenal fatigue in women. Certified Menopause Clinician Marcy Holmes and OB/GYN Marcelle Pick mentioned the following things in their article:

  • Stress. This is brought about by the fact that most women of today are overworked. Holmes and Pick said that every challenge to the mind and body results to stress in the adrenal gland. These challenges include lack of sleep, threat of losing one’s job, commute to work, reliance on coffee and other stimulants and illness or surgery.
  • High cortisol levels. Cortisol helps us convert fats into energy, balance electrolytes, calibrate heartbeat and counteract inflammation. No matter how helpful cortisol is to our body’s proper functioning however, Holmes and Pick says that higher cortisol levels have destructive effects on the adrenal glands. It can result to destruction of healthy muscles and bones, slowing down of the body’s healing process and weakening of the immune system among others. In effect, this can result to damage not only to a woman’s body but her mind and spirit as well.
  • Loss of DHEA production. This is actually a result of high cortisol levels. As the body produces more cortisol, DHEA production is lessened. This then means that a woman will lack the capacity to balance here sex hormones since this is the DHEA’s primary function.

Adrenal fatigue symptoms in women should never be neglected. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, it pays to submit yourself to a doctor’s diagnosis. He may recommend you to undertake an adrenal test.

please acknowledge that naturopathic physicians can provide data on the low accuracy rates, inadmissability or overused T3, T4 tests, that are insensitive to actual variations in some women with “all” the symptoms but with no actual credibility with the physicians charging them for non-services. My own GP told me for yrs I was not low in thyroid, because I was just above the line, but had arthritic, neural, muscular pains that she liked to dump in the fibromyalgia bucket, along with me and my chronic, debilitating insomnia, total loss of libido & sexual organ function, infertile, edema, degenerative spinal tissue and bony structures, tendonitis, tendinitis, low BP that became hypertension, incontinence, food and salt cravings, biliousness, constipation, allergies, chronic slow to heal infections. Life had not been worth the living forced on me and cancer patients make me jealous because they get it, get well or die, while I have been dragged from hour to torturous hr, year after yr, decade after decade with no income, loss of myself and family and the doctors who get paid are unwilling to treat me, for pity’s sake, because my test results were just above some arbitrary line drawn by pharmaceutical corporations….help yourself out of their little boxes of merciless, blind greed, if you have these untreated symptoms, by getting to naturopathic doctors and as much research as you can find, until you have a treatment that relieves your symptoms. Some are hard to get totally rid of quickly, be patient, keep trying until you have success, celebrate your successes and thank God for His Love. He has mercy for us; but we have to go get it where it may be, on a path of constant prayer that knows where faith can be found.
