What is LEARN Diet? Myths & Facts about LEARN Diet

Introduction

The LEARN diet is a diet developed by Dr. Kelly Brownell of Yale University, a nationally recognized obesity research expert. The LEARN diet is low in fat, is high in carbohydrates and is often recommended by health professionals. LEARN is an acronym that stands for the five fundamental components of the program: Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitudes, Relationships and Nutrition. The LEARN diet is one of the most comprehensive behavioral approaches for weight control and dieting.

The LEARN diet, commonly known as the LEARN program, is not only for people interested in weight loss. This diet can also be helpful when it comes to addressing other concerns such as stress management, physical exercise and healthy eating. The program consists of sixteen weekly lessons that work on how a person’s lifestyle, exercises, attitudes, relationships and nutrition can impact one’s overall health and weight. The weekly lessons are followed by eight monthly lessons. The program ends with one concluding lesson.

LEARN Diet Myths and Facts

It is commonly believed that carbohydrates make a person fat. The truth is that carbohydrates aren’t always bad for you. In fact, carbohydrates are a necessary part of a person’s diet. You simply need to learn how to differentiate the good carbohydrates from the bad ones. The good carbohydrates are nutritious and filling, but do not contain added fat and sugar.

The LEARN diet is based on the USDA food pyramid and recommends that participants get 55 to 60 percent of their calories from carbohydrates. A diet that is low in carbohydrates can at times make a person feel irritable, tired and constipated.

Many other diets suggest fat free foods. The LEARN diet does not completely restrict one from consuming food with fat. Fat is good for you because it is needed for energy and tissue repair. The LEARN diet recommends that a person get about 10 percent of calories from saturated fat.

Although the LEARN diet is an effective solution for long-term weight loss, this diet is not a quick solution like other diets are. As mentioned earlier, this diet does not just focus on the food that a person eats, but focuses on five fundamental components. This diet requires dedication and commitment.

The LEARN Diet

The first thing the LEARN program teaches you is how to identify possible health risks. It covers topics from binge eating, reading nutritional labels to knowing one’s Body Mass Index.
